We continue to take on new referrals, they are a varied and interesting group of clients allowing us both to get involved in what we enjoy most - working with clients and the challenges of assessments and treatments.

People often ask us about return to driving following their illness and with their changed level of ability.

There is a legal requirement regarding return to driving for people who have, for instance, suffered a stroke, TIA, head injury, have epilepsy or have ongoing impaired physical ability. Rehabilitation professionals can give advice regarding driving assessment, funding for an individual to be assessed and adaptations, plus arrange an appointment for the person at a mobility centre if necessary. An assessment can enable people to try out various adaptations in a safe environment before deciding what is best for them and often increases their confidence in making the decision to return to driving or not.

The Stroke Association publish an information sheet on the subject and the DVLA a guide for drivers with medical conditions which covers most medical issues that affect driving.

For the longer term, adaptations to ordinary vehicles and specialist models may be needed to get drivers safely and legally back on the road. Motability and the Mobility Information Service are good sources of information as well as the Department of Transport for information about the Blue Badge Parking Scheme. But this can leave a problem in the short term, while assessments and adaptations are in the pipeline. For instance a holiday or an essential trip, perhaps to a family wedding or an important appointment, may be impossible with a normal car.Hiring an adapted car could be the solution and we came across the family-run company Adapted Car Hire based in Wanstead, East London. They offer cars adapted for drivers and for passengers. They have compact, medium and large vehicles adapted for drivers and passenger wheelchair adapted vehicles.
