Birgit Rathje-ValeBirgit qualified as an Occupational Therapist (OT) in 1994 with an Honours degree in Occupational Therapy from St Andrews School of Occupational Therapy. Since then she has acquired a wide range of clinical, managerial, service development and training experience, working in the NHS, voluntary, Social Services and private sector.

Her expertise includes the assessment and rehabilitation of individuals with neurological conditions, acquired and traumatic brain injury, complex needs. Whilst working in the NHS, Birgit also has been an active member of the College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section – Neurological Practice (COTSS-NP), working nationally on the Stroke Clinical Forum and locally taking the role of Chairperson for the Oxfordshire regional COTSS-NP group for a number of years.

Birgit established her independent practice in 2001 and in this capacity has mainly been treating individuals with neurological conditions, but also medical and orthopaedic needs. She has furthermore undertaken work with OT Stores at the international 'Reha' Exhibition in Düsseldorf, acting as a translator with specialist OT knowledge.

In 2006 she developed her independent practice and together with Jayne founded Independent Rehabilitation Services (IRS). With the continuous expansion of IRS Angela and Ian joined in 2009.

Birgit also writes regularly for Choice Magazine on O.T. related topics.

Since 1998 Birgit has also worked for Harrison Associates developing and delivering training programmes for OTs.

She has a particular interest in neurological rehabilitation and outcome measures. She is skilled in complex needs assessments and rehabilitation, writing and guiding individual treatment plans, report writing and training, plus supervision.

In 2010 Birgit also joined Bush & Co working as a case manager.

Birgit is a member of a number of different Occupational Therapy professional bodies, such as OT in independent practice (COTIP), OT in work and productivity (COTWPP), OT in neurological practice (COTNP) and she is an associated member of the Institute for Leadership and Management and the British Association of Case Managers (BHBICM).

She is a registered member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT), registered with the Health Professional Council (HPC) and has undergone a Criminal Records Bureau check.
