holistic assessmentA holistic assessment is a detailed assessment of the individual's physical, social, spiritual and psychological performance in all aspects of daily living, such as self care, leisure and work. This results in the identification of areas of ability, difficulty and needs. Individuals can be assessed in their home, workplace or any other appropriate environment. Methods of evaluation will vary depending on the person's needs, as well as goals and would include both standardized and functional assessments.

A holistic assessment comprises of four components:

  • Assessment of the individual, particularly their abilities and needs
  • Assessment of activities carried out by the person
  • Assessment of the environment in which the individual carries out their chosen activities.
  • Evaluation of the interaction of all of the above components with each other and how this affects the individual in their quest for independence and quality of life.
